Defending Champs U18 Boys Miss Chance to Repeat; Go Down in Championship Game at 2013 US Club Regional Tournament

June 25, 2013
The Striker U18 boys entered the championship game of the U19 US Club Northwest Regional tournament on a 21-game unbeaten streak, with a fast-attacking offense that had averaged 4 goals per game through the preliminary rounds.  But finalists North Kitsap Storm were a big, strong and athletic team that they also had reached the final by winning all of its preliminary games.  Strikers struck first with a fourth minute goal by Kyle Higgins, assisted by Adam Mickelson, and several more opportunities looked promising.  However it was the Storm who hit next with a goal in the 28th minute.  Taylor Riley, assisted by Mickelson, gave the Strikers the lead shortly before halftime.  At 63 minutes, a physical battle in front of the goal was won by the big Storm striker who tied the game, and another North Kitsap goal at 72 minutes saw Strikers face a deficit for the first time during the tournament before the Storm finished off the game with a final minute counterattack.  Coach Geoff Birnbaum was disappointed in the result but happy with the team’s season and optimistic about his players’ future.  “The kids are disappointed but they can look back at a season of many successes, entertaining play and a group of teammates they will appreciate for many years.  Many of our players will be returning to this team next season and we wish them great high school seasons.  Others will be moving forward with their college education and some will be just beginning their collegiate soccer careers.”

U18 Girls Feature in US Club Regionals Championship Game

June 25, 2013
The Strikers U18 girls played their way into the championship game of the US Club Soccer Northwest Regional tournament with 3 strong performances that coach Paolo Rizzon called “full of enthusiasm.”  Despite losing in the U19 final to a talented Eastside FC “Grads” team, Rizzon felt the team performed well overall.  “I believe everybody in our side (including the players, the parents and me) are happy with the experience and the results we got throughout the tournament.  All of the teams that were in the pool were very good, and I think our girls really raised their level.”  Rizzon praised the consistency of Ruby Kazemi, Nasrin Chaudhry, Susie Hawthorne and Anna Hochhalter during the tournament, but he credited a team effort for the girls' solid performance.  “On and off, everybody had great moments and they all were influential on the games.”
